What should you do if you start choking when you’re alone?
The 1st thing you should do? Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Do this even if you can’t speak.
Afterwards, go to a mirror then open your mouth and look in. If you can see what’s stuck, pull it out. If you can’t see it, don’t try to maneuver your fingers way down your throat, because if you ultimately can’t grab it, it may drop further down.
Failing results, you must perform a Heimlich maneuver on yourself. Here’s how you do it. Make a fist with one hand and put it into the middle of your stomach. It should go between the ribs and the navel. Take your other hand and put it over the fisted hand. Then, using the unfisted hand thrust forcibly and quickly the fisted hand up and into your stomach. The object should pop out.
Another method is by using by using a stationary object like the back of a chair and place it against your stomach, halfway between the ribs and the navel. The height can be adjusted by tilting the chair. Bend over the chair back, and press your stomach against it forcibly. This puts upward pressure on your diaphragm, pushing air out of your lungs, hopefully with enough force to dislodge the object.
